Minimum courtesies from hosts to artists and neighbors

When I’m working with new house concert hosts, often they ask “So what are the minimum expectations of me as a host?”

The Golden Rule goes a long way, as usual.  Here’s a modest list of specific courtesies that might serve all of us regardless of experience:

    ·      reply to artist booking inquiries, usually within the week....some simple version of a Yes or No or Maybe

    ·      run your concerts as private events (held in a residence, no advertising, no ticket sales or required advance payment for reservations)

    ·      be considerate of neighbors (sound level, parking)

    ·      artist permission required for any audio/video/photos taken of the performance

    ·      alcohol and safety smarts – understand your liability

    ·      let's avoid last-minute expectations made of artists, such as "hey guess what?  we got you an opening act!" or "great show--do stick around, our artists always lead a post-concert song circle with our night-owl friends," or "be a dear and walk my dog," or "you won't mind if I join you on stage right now to sit in for a couple of songs, would you?"....yes, these have all occurred!

    ·      paint a clear picture of your overnight lodgings and the presence of any animals

    ·      if you’re having problems filling seats, consult with the artist before you make any decisions

    really like this.

Think James Taylor and Sting, without the fame, fortune, or receding hairlines.
